Things I can live without 1: bed
I partly slept on the floor again for the past nights. It helps me fall asleep so quick and kinda wake up fresher, at least that's what I'm imagining it like. I heard that sleeping on the floor is healthier and that's why I tried it but it also feels more comfortable to me sometimes, maybe because I think it is healthy.
A bed/ mattress was the number 1 thing I made effort to get when I moved into my flat. Wanting to only have the essentials, I set myself on having a bed and a standing desk. Curiously, these are the main items I want to try living without now.
I don't even use my bed for sleeping that much. I would say that 1/3 of my time on my matress is spent sleeping and the rest is spent "doing stuff". That includes writing on my PC, homework, preparing important documents but also watching movies and chatting, all spent lying on my mattress with the PC open on top. And all these things I want to do at a desk or at least sitting up properly but I always end up doing them in my bed, especially when I'm tired. So I could just as well do them on the floor, maybe on top of the blanket or a carpet.
I feel like my mattress is just a place-taker. It kinda doesn't properly feel fitting anywhere and is used for 1 activity which I even sometimes do outside of the bed (sleeping) and activities that I don't even want to do there. A mattress is long and thick and thus kinda always takes up some space.
Of course, a mattress is also a comfort item. A place where I can throw myself onto after coming home from a long day, something that is instantly warm and soft and comfy. But what if I lived without it? I will put out my sleeping mat every night to sleep with just the pillow and blanket on it. "Activities" I will do on the desk (when I feel not too tired) or sitting or lying on the floor, depending on my perceived energy level. Meanwhile, I will store the mattress in my cellar compartment for the duration of this first experiment, 1 week.
Right now, I am still laying on my mattress writing this. So let me put everything in place. A sleeping mat does feel kind of hard at first but I think I might get used to it. Alternatively I want to try out a blanket or even just cover to put on the floor because that kinda felt "softer" often.
I'm curious to find out if my sleep quality will change and where I will move my non sleep bed- activities. I hope getting rid of a conventional bed can allow me to have more free space in my room and use to do stuff I actually, really enjoy.
